The South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO), has exercised its authority as granted by section 15 of the SAHRC Act, in issuing subpoenas to the Makana Local Municipality. This action is prompted by their non-responsiveness to issues relating to service delivery and multiple allegations letters from the ECPO.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) Northern Cape Provincial Office together with Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana, responsible for the focal area of children and persons with disabilities, will be conducting an engagement with the Northern Cape Department of Education to address the state of access to education for learners with disabilities in the ZF Mgcawu District. This engagement is part of the Commission's broader investigation into complaints regarding the Department’s alleged failure to ensure the proper placement of children with disabilities in an appropriate educational setting, as mandated by the Constitution and the relevant legislation.

On Sunday 25 June 2024, the residents of Johannesburg woke up to yet another building fire in town. This incident resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 4 people and left over 200 people displaced. The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) sends condolences to the families of the fire tragedy victims. The fire in Jeppestown occurred on the eve of the 1st anniversary of the Usindiso fire, which claimed the lives of over 77 people and prompted an inquiry by the Gauteng Provincial Government.
