Media Advisory: The SAHRC Northern Cape Provincial Office to conduct an engagement with the Northern Cape Department of Education

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) Northern Cape Provincial Office together with Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana, responsible for the focal area of children and persons with disabilities, will be conducting an engagement with the Northern Cape Department of Education to address the state of access to education for learners with disabilities in the ZF Mgcawu District. This engagement is part of the Commission's broader investigation into complaints regarding the Department’s alleged failure to ensure the proper placement of children with disabilities in an appropriate educational setting, as mandated by the Constitution and the relevant legislation.

The engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date : Friday, 30 August 2024

Time : 10:00 AM to 13:00 PM

Venue : Protea Hotel Kimberley (Kimberley Big Hole - W Circular Rd), Kimberley

The aim of the engagement is to elicit responses that will assist in finalising the Commission's ongoing investigation into this matter and guide its future actions to address the urgent needs of learners with disabilities.

The engagement will be attended by key stakeholders including representatives from the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, Down Syndrome South Africa, and the Association for Persons with Disabilities.
