Media Advisory: The SAHRC’s North West Provincial Office to commemorate the International Day to Protect Education from Attack

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Friday, 6 September 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (the Commission) North West Provincial Office will commemorate the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, as a reminder of the critical importance of safeguarding education from the devastating impact of conflict, violence and insecurity.

The North West Province is experiencing significant challenges and forms of violence disrupting learning, including the burning of schools and protest actions. These disruptions not only jeopardise the safety and well-being of students, educators, and community members, but also undermine the fundamental right to education and perpetuate cycles of instability and inequality within communities.

The Commission will convene a series of stakeholder engagements aimed at addressing critical issues in schools. These engagements are scheduled as follows:

Stakeholder engagement with Government Departments and Municipalities:

  • Date:           Monday, 9 September 2024
  • Venue:        Protea Hotel Mahikeng
  • Time:          09:00 – 14:00

Stakeholder engagement with Community Members in Moretele Local Municipality:

  • Date:           Tuesday, 10 September 2024
  • Venue:        Boitemogelo Primary School – Mogogelo Village
  • Time:          13:30 – 16:00

Stakeholder engagement with Community Members in Madibeng Local Municipality:

  • Date:           Wednesday, 11 September 2024
  • Venue:        Ntolo Secondary School – Madidi Village
  • Time:          14:00 – 16:30
