Media Advisory: SAHRC Gauteng Provincial Office to conduct stakeholder engagement to discuss the prevalence of violence and discrimination in schools

Attention: Editors and Reporters

03 September 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC/ the Commission) Gauteng Provincial Office (GPO) has received several complaints regarding the issue of violence and discrimination in schools. This has raised the need for the Commission to do a follow-up on its previous report and the recommendations thereto on the issue of violence in schools.

Violence and discrimination in schools are critical issues that affect the safety, well-being, and educational outcomes of students. These problems are particularly concerning due to their prevalence and impact on the rights of children to receive an education in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.

The engagement will focus on reviewing the Commission’s previous report recommendations, interrogating the state of affairs in the school environment and discussing ways of creating inclusive, and supportive educational environments where both students and teachers can thrive without fear of violence or discrimination. This will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

The stakeholder engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:

Date:                      03 September 2024

Time:                     09h00-13h00

Venue:                   SAHRC training centre, 32 Princess of Wales, Sentinel House, Parktown

- Ends -
