The South African Human Rights Commission paid the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Johannesburg a visit on Monday following the suspension of a whistleblower doctor.
Dr Tim de Maayer, who was suspended after writing about the poor conditions at hospital, was reinstated on Friday following a meeting between Gauteng Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi and the hospital.
The commissions’ Buang Jones says De Maayer should be commended for speaking out.
“We would like to commend Dr Maayer for acting in good faith and in the public interest by making this disclosure. We also welcome the intervention introduced by the hospital CEO to address challenges faced by the hospital.
“The commission has requested the hospital to provide periodic reports as part of our monitoring to ensure that all the issues that we raised by Dr de Maayer are addressed and that there is overall improvement at the hospital.
“We would also like to encourage healthcare workers to raise concerns without any fear of victimisation.”
