The South African Human Rights Commission welcomes the steps taken by Parliament to ensure that the Protection of State Information Bill passes constitutional muster. The decision by the ad hoc committee to ensure that the Bill does not trump the Promotion of Access to Information Act as the law governing access to information is commended. The Commission hopes this decision will be reflected in the final draft of the Bill

Putting an end to torture in Africa

Torture is one of the most profound violations of human rights and dignity. In 2002, the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights adopted the Robben Island Guidelines, a first consolidated effort to prohibit and prevent torture in Africa. 10 years later, time has come to take stock of the developments in the region.

The South African Human Rights Commission condemns the violence that erupted in Marikana Lonmin Mine in Rustenburg, that led to the tragic deaths of mine workers on Thursday. Reports say as many as 30 miners were killed, while many others were injured. The SAHRC calls for an urgent Commission of enquiry to be formed to investigate this matter and the responsibilities of all those involved. The enquiry will also need to address the underlying factors that contributed to this tragedy, such as the living conditions of mine-workers and their families outlined in the report by Bench Marks that was recently released at the SAHRC office.

The South African Human Rights Commission is looking at extending the deadline for submissions on the Charter of Basic Education Rights for Children in South Africa.

On 23 July 2012 the Deputy Chair of the South African Human Rights Commission, Commissioner Pregs Govender together with the Western Cape Provincial Office facilitated a process to resolve the matter involving former Cape Peninsula University of Technology students who were involved in posting racist comments on the social networking site, Facebook. Two of the three former students attended the meeting with the Commission.

This day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1997 with the aim of supporting efforts to eliminate torture and promoting the application of the International Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or punishment (CAT).
