The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) has completed an investigation into the problems with the scholar transport in the Eastern Cape and found that the Eastern Cape Education and Transport Departments violated the learner’s right to basic education by failing to provide them with transport to school.

The South African Human Rights Commission welcomes the judgment handed over by the South Gauteng High Court in a matter relating to the illegal detention of immigrants against the Department of Home Affairs.
The judgment was given today, the 28th August 2014, in the matter of the South African Human Rights Commission & others v Lindela Repatriation Centre & others.

The South African Human Rights Commission (Commission) found that the Kopanong Local Municipality, in the Free State violated the resident’s right to human dignity by its failure to provide safe and sustainable water supply fundamental for a healthy, productive and dignified life. The Municipality has been given 18 months to implement turnaround strategy to fix the water crisis.

The South African Human Rights Commission is calling on the Free State Education Department to develop procedures for monitoring and reporting on initiatives to counter racism in public schools in the province.
This comes after a finding made by the Commission against the Principal and staff at Dr Viljoen Combined School in a racism case.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) wishes to express its concern at the arrest of peaceful protestors staging a sit-in at the Free State Health Department’s Head Office. We have been advised that most of the protestors are women health care workers expressing dissatisfaction with the state of health care in the province and the alleged dismissal of about 3000 community health workers.

A water crisis has hit the communities of Bloemhof in the last week of May with allegations of a cholera outbreak and patients afflicted with diarrhoea.
