Media Advisory: The SAHRC’s Northern Cape Provincial office to conduct targeted monitoring in the Frances Baard District

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/the Commission) in the Northern Cape Province, together with Commissioner Aseza Gungubele, the Commissioner responsible for Migration, Climate Justice, and Human Settlements, will conduct targeted monitoring in correctional facilities and informal settlements in the Frances Baard District Municipality, covering Kimberley and surrounding areas.

The targeted monitoring is scheduled to take place as follows: 

  • Date: Tuesday, 4 February 2025
  • Facilities: Barkley West Correctional Centre and Tswelopele Correctional Centre

 As part of monitoring correctional facilities, the Northern Cape Provincial Office (NCPO) and Commissioner Gungubele, will assess the conditions of correctional facilities, with particular attention to the treatment of detainees. The focus will be on ensuring that they are treated fairly and not subjected to discrimination or victimisation.

As part of monitoring informal settlements, the NCPO and Commissioner Gungubele, will assess the level of provision of basic services, including water, sanitation, and healthcare facilities, to ensure adequate service delivery. Additionally, the monitoring activities will include an assessment of detention facilities and police holding cells, nationals, ensuring that detainees are treated fairly and not subjected to discrimination or victimisation.
