The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/the Commission) in partnership with the KwaDlangezwa Advice Office, University of Zululand, GCIS, Public Protector South Africa, and uMhlathuze Municipality will commemorate International Human Rights in Port Dunford, uMhlathuze Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal Province.

The 10th of December marks the commemoration of International Human Rights Day (IHRD). The day is globally observed annually in remembrance of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by United Nations General Assembly on the 10th of December 1948. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHRC) is a milestone document that proclaimed the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being.

The UDHR, in turn informed various legal systems and constitutions across the world which recognises human rights. This milestone document provided the foundation for our very own Constitution within South Africa, a Constitution which provides the Commission with its mandate to protect, promote and monitor the attainment and observance of the human rights enshrined within Chapter Two of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights. Furthermore, International Human Rights Day, coincides with the signing of the South African Constitution.

The Commission recognizes the significance of this calendar day commemoration, and that it also gives us an opportunity to reflect on human rights, and the ongoing journey for its realization both e in South Africa and the rest of the world.

This year’s International Human Rights Day Theme is Our Rights, Our Future, Rights Now”. The event will also focus on raising awareness on 16 days of activism against women and children, and the criminal justice system role players in ensuring access to justice.
