The sphere of local Government is pivotal in the advancement of South Africa's developmental agenda, particularly in the provision of basic services. The local Government sphere is mandated in law to provide various services, which include among others water, sanitation, electricity, and refuse removal.
In recent years, the SAHRC has received several complaints regarding poor service delivery at a local government sphere in the Free State Province. The SAHRC consolidated these complaints and convened an inquiry in March 2024. The inquiry sought to assess the state of service delivery within local municipalities in the Free State at a systemic level and make findings and recommendations aimed at addressing the service delivery challenges. Various stakeholders participated at the inquiry including state and non-state actors.
The SAHRC has concluded its report following its inquiry into the state of service delivery at local government level in the Free State Province. The report contains findings and recommendations which are aimed at fostering better service delivery by municipalities in the Free State Province.
