Media Advisory: Commissioner Madlingozi conducts monitoring visits and stakeholder engagements in the Free State Province

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Monday, 11 November 2024

Commissioner Tshepo Madlingozi is conducting monitoring visits and stakeholder engagements in the Free State on 11 and 12 November 2024. The two day-activities were necessitated by a number of human rights challenges in the province that fall within the purview of Commissioner Madlingozi’s focal areas of Equality, Anti-Racism, Justice & Education.

Pit Latrines in Schools

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) continues to monitor the eradication of pit latrines in schools around South Africa. The Commission will be visiting schools in the Mangaung Metro Municipality that have been reported to have pit latrines in the previous years. The SAHRC seeks to verify that these schools have received sanitation infrastructure that respects the right to safety, dignity, and health of school learners and staff.

Equality Courts

The SAHRC will also be visiting some magistrate courts in the province, to determine whether they are adequately equipped and capacitated to receive and hear equality matters brought by individuals and organisations (including by the SAHRC).

Stakeholder Engagement – Free State LGBTQIA+ Community

The Office will be attending engagements with organisations working with the LGBTQIA+ community in the Free State. The organisations include Tholwana ea Molemo and Rainbow Seeds. The engagements seek to learn about the experiences and challenges of this community in the province, and to foster working relationships in order to advance the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Free State.

Stakeholder Engagement – Rastafari Community

The SAHRC is concerned with the criminalisation and discrimination of the Rastafari community across South Africa. The engagement with the Free State Rastafari community seeks to learn more about the challenges that they experience, and how the SAHRC can be a partner in protecting and promoting their right to cultural and religious practice.
