The WCPO will educate the attendees, including the youth living with Down Syndrome, parents/caregivers, supporters, and community at large, on human rights. Particularly focussing on the right to equality and inclusivity. Discrimination against persons on the basis of disability contravenes the right to equality as protected in our Constitution. In addition, international agreements which South Africa is party to, such as the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRP), are contravened in events where persons with disabling conditions are excluded from participation or simply not included.
Persons with disabilities are often not included due to concerns about their abilities. This event demonstrates the ability of people with Down Syndrome to acquire skills sets that persons without impairments struggle to acquire. Surf NexGen and the Shumeez Scott Foundation, through this event, are actively breaking down barriers for persons with disabilities and the WCPO is honoured to be joining them in this quest while capacitating the community about human rights.
Our Constitution enjoins non-discrimination and this event demonstrates inclusivity in action. The engagement will take place as follows:
- Date : Sundday,27 October 2024
- Time : 08h00 – 16h00
- Venue : Muizenberg Beach, Cape Town
Ends
