Media Advisory: The South African Human Rights Commission, Limpopo Provincial Office to meet with Thulamela Local Municipality following a complaint received relating to operations at Thohoyandou Landfill Site.

Date: 15 August 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

Having an environment that is protected; and that is not harmful to the health and well-being of communities is essential to everyone’s health, dignity, and prosperity. In recognition of the fundamental importance of a good environment, the Constitution of South Africa entrenches this right in terms of Section 24.

It is important for municipalities that are granted licenses to operate and manage waste disposal facilities to fulfil their crucial role of protecting the environment and ensuring the operations are not creating an environment that can harm members of the communities.

The SAHRC in Limpopo intends to meet with Thulamela Local Municipality following a complaint against the municipality.
