Media Alert: SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office monitors detention facilities in the South African Police Services (SAPS) – Magatle and Zebediela.

Date: 15 August 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Limpopo Provincial Office (LPO) continue to observe and revere the Thursday in Black campaign towards a world without rape and violence, as part of commemorating Women’s Month 2024, the Limpopo Provincial Office will conduct the monitoring of  the places of detention – South African Police Services – cells.

The above aims to spark awareness and conversions regarding gender-based violence and femicide, leading to the 16 Days of Activism engagements.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of GBV and Femicide in the world, with deeply entrenched issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and femicide. The inspection and monitoring of detention facilities takes a different angle of raising awareness as these are facilities where victims seek refuge and where alleged culprits would be detained.

The monitoring will take place as follows:

Dates : 15 August 2024

           Time  : 09h00

Place : Magatle and Zebediela Police Station
