Media Advisory: SAHRC Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana to lead monitoring at facilities for vulnerable people and a stakeholder engagement with the Northern Cape Department of Social Development

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) led by Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana will conduct targeted monitoring at facilities for vulnerable people in Kimberley and a stakeholder engagement with the Northern Cape Department of Social Development.  These events are part of ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare and rights of the most vulnerable populations.

Monitoring activities will be conducted as follows:

Date                : Wednesday, 14 August 2024

Time               : 09:00 AM to 16:00 PM

The monitoring activities will focus on assessing the current state and effectiveness of services provided to individuals living with disabilities, elderly residents, children in need of safety, and survivors of abuse and/or gender-based violence.

Monitoring and oversight visits will be conducted at the following facilities:

  • Lerato Place of Safety for Children & Youth,
  • Boitumelo Special School
  • Re Tlameleng Special School for the Blind & Deaf, and
  • Resthaven Home for Aged.

The Stakeholder Engagement will be held as follows: 

Date    : Thursday, 15 August 2024

Time   : 09:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Venue : Garden Court Kimberley (120 Du Toitspan Road), Kimberley.

The stakeholder engagement will focus on a range of issues critical to the welfare and rights of the most vulnerable groups within the Northern Cape community. The discussions will centre around programmes and initiatives for people living with disabilities, challenges and areas of improvement; support services and facilities for the elderly, policy and implementation challenges; gender-based violence prevention and support services, empowerment programmes for women as well as child protection services and programmes.
