Media Alert: SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office inspects and monitors detention facilities in Polokwane Police Station.

Date: 08 August 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) Limpopo Provincial Office (LPO) supporting Commissioner Sandra Makoasha will today be inspecting and monitoring the detention facilities in Polokwane Police Station.

The SAHRC undertakes the above whilst revering the Thursdays in Black campaign which sparks awareness and conversations regarding gender-based violence and femicide, leading to the 16 Days of Activism.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of GBV and Femicide in the world, with deeply entrenched issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and femicide. The inspection and monitoring of detention facilities takes a different angle of raising awareness as these are facilities where victims seek refuge and where alleged culprits would be detained.

The inspection and monitoring will take place as follows:

Dates : 08 August 2024

           Time  : 08h00

           Place : Polokwane Police Station
