South Africa celebrates Women's Day on 09 August annually as a tribute to the women who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956 in protest against the extension of pass laws to women. Pass laws deeply affected South African women by constraining their freedom of movement, impacting their economic stability, separating them from their families, and contributing to their marginalisation and exploitation. Their struggles under these laws were a significant aspect of the broader fight against apartheid.
As a tribute to this brave act of resistance, the South African Human Rights Commission aims to host an engagement with a theme “Women Lawyers in Various Spaces” that speaks to the experiences of dynamic women lawyers working in different industries and sectors. The dialogue will be an open space where aspiring legal minds will be able to ask questions to women professionals who operate within the legal space; discuss the challenges and opportunities that exist for someone with a legal qualification and the different avenues that can be pursued post-graduation. This dialogue is part of a series of sessions and initiatives hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Office celebrating human rights, women, the youth, and different ways young people can impact society
University students from various South African institutions of higher learning were invited to join the dialogue in person and interact with the panellists.
