AHRC calls for gentlerneutral school uniforms Uniform and appearance policies infringe on pupils' rights to dignity, says human rights commission The South African Human Rights Commission SAHRC has found that in certain circumstances, school uniform and appearance policies infringe on pupils' rights to dignity in South African schools. Commissioner of the SAHRC, Professor Tshepo Madlingozi presented the SAHRC school uniform report's findings and recommendations during a parliament briefing before the portfolio committee of Basic Education on Tuesday. "After noting an increase in reports of alleged overregulation of the school uniform and appearances of pupils, the commission, through its Eastern Cape provincial office resolved to not only further investigate these matters, but also host an inquiry into allegations of discrimination against pupils in this regard," said Madlingozi.

"I asked them to call my parents but again they ignored me. They put us in the cells where we found other detainees." The girl said she used one of her fellow detainees' cellphone to call her parents, whose phones went to voicemail. She eventually reached her sister, who alerted their father. "I was scared, tired, worried and anxious. I just wanted to go home. Every time I see a police van I wonder whether they will arrest me again." The teenager's father said on arrival at the police station no one could tell him why his daughter was locked up.

THE decision to discontinue Cape Town City's DialaRide service to Atlantis from March 18, will affect commuters with disability who rely heavily on the service. Among those who are unhappy are two regular customers with disability, and a couple who complained of discrimination because their threeyearold daughter could not accompany them as she was a minor in terms of the service's rigid registration policy. The City's Mayco member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas, said budget cuts and an oversubscribed service had led to a review of the service which had high cancellations, and passengers who lived close to MyCiTi bus stops. He said the annual budget was R28.1 million with an additional R5m for the 2023 24 financial year.

THE SA Human Rights Commission SAHRC in KwaZuluNatal has called a meeting with water experts to help address ongoing water supply issues in Durban in violation of residents' right to water. Provincial SAHRC manager Pavershree Padayachee said the commission has since January undertaken various initiatives, such as convening meetings with affected communities; participating in war room meetings; and liaising with various government actors across the three spheres of government.

Former prisoner sues ministry of justice for R4m as correctional services confirms probe into two assault claims at East London jail ZIYANDA ZWENI and SITHANDIWE VELAPHI The correctional services department has confirmed two assault cases are under investigation as allegations of abuse emerged from the women's prison in East London at the weekend, with one woman filing a multimillionrand civil claim. Serving and former female inmates at the Correctional Centre in West Bank have made damning allegations against some prisonwarders, accusing them of physical abuse and other criminal acts. A former warder at the facility has given credence to some allegations including that inmates were beaten with batons and fists saying this was a commonplace occurrence.

The SA Human Rights Commission's Eastern Cape office has been inundated with complaints about a lack of basic rights, such as access to clean water, road infrastructure, health, food, dignity and education. The Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay metros lead the charge in bringing submissions to the commission. Complaints include violations of sections 27, 10 and 29 of the Bill of Rights. Section 27 deals with the right of access to healthcare services, including reproductive healthcare, sufficient food and water and social security.

The representatives were forced to appear before the commission in East London on Monday. The inquiry was prompted by a surge in complaints about Eastern Cape roads, which complainants said were significantly hindering access to their fundamental rights.

After its inquiry into the July 2021 riots, the SA Human Rights Commission says it can't link them to the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma, and doesn't know who the chief instigators were. Chris Barron asked commissioner PHILILE NTULI ... Your inquiry found the riots were orchestrated by wellresourced "primary actors". How can you not know who they were? Within the scope of the submissions we received we found quite valuable information we were able to unpack ... Shouldn't finding out who the primary actors were have been one of your most urgent priorities? Of course, it was.

The South African Human Rights Commission SAHRC has promised not to give up on finding a solution to the eThekwini water crisis until all areas have running water. The SAHRC said this after receiving a memorandum from the Democratic Alliance DA KZN provincial leader Francois Rodgers during a picket at the SAHRC Durban offices yesterday. The party said it is concerned over the SAHRC's "nonresponse" to issues affecting eThekwini residents. Since the floods in 2022, the water situation in the eThekwini Municipality, particularly in the North of Durban encompassing Phoenix, Tongaat, Durban North, Greenwood Park, Glenashley, Virginia, Sunningdale and Umhlanga has become progressively worse. According to the memorandum the residents of Bester have been without water for 14 years. Rodgers The DA picket outside the SAHRC offices over "ongoing nonresponse" to issues affecting eThekwini residents.

SHiNE or Social Harmony National Effort is the Commission's project that was conceptualised after an eight month nationwide consultative process headed up by Deputy Commissioner, Fatima Chohan.

ALMOST nine years later, six Chatsworth families who were moved from a block of flats to park homes, are still waiting to move back or for the promise of freestanding houses to be delivered on. The residents said the park homes were erected on a primary school ground in Westcliff, due to the homes "collapsing" and a failing sewerage system. Christina Pillay, 81, shares a tworoom park home with her daughter Rosanne Singh, 47, soninlaw, and 12yearold grandson. Singh said they were told that it would take six months for the repairs to be completed at the flats. "But nine years later we are still waiting to go back to our flat. "While we are grateful to have a shelter, how much longer are we expected to wait to have a proper roof over our heads? "My son sleeps on a couch in the same room as my mother.

Claims of an outdated uniform policy which does not accommodate queer, genderfluid, lesbian or other LGBTQl+ pupils are being made against a KwaDwesi school which has found itself at the centre of a heated row. Now calls are being made for the policy to be reviewed. Lungisa High School grade 11 pupils identifying as lesbian are allegedly being singled out, harassed, berated and even ridiculed for wearing trousers. While the situation escalates, a Gqeberha education expert and the SA Human Rights Commission SAIIRC have reiterated the need for reform to accommodate all gender norms.

PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa has been warned that the SA Human Rights Commission SAHRC report into the July 2021 unrest should be a major red flag for him to bulk up the country's defence and stop micromanaging State Security matters. During the release of the report on Monday, SAHRC Commissioner Philile Ntuli said the destruction witnessed during the July 2021 unrest was symptomatic of unresolved systemic conditions, such as postCovid19 economic recovery, high unemployment, lawlessness, discrimination, socioeconomic divides, and issues within the security sector.
